See elk flee from packs of wolves, or bears mauling deer as you sneak through the forests of Skyrim. The next wolf you encounter howls, and brings his entire pack down on your head. He accepts the threat you are, and allows you to pass. You quietly walk around him as he snarls, never turning your back to him, and gradually move away from him.

Perhaps you encounter a lone wolf, who stares you down. Wolves spawn in large packs, and actually seem to have some personality. It makes the wilderness considerably more dangerous. SkyTEST - Realistic Animals and Predators - This one is probably the most integral for my ranger playthrough. Winter is Coming - Cloaks - You're a wildman, go kill a bear and wear his skin, both as a trophy and to protect your furry bum from getting rained and snowed on all the time with Climates of Tamriel. There's lots of little satchels and pouches that seem well suited for a ranger. More character customization, and I like the extra carryweight. This one is another constant in my load order, no matter what playthrough.īandolier - You're a ready-man, you carry all life's essentials on your back. They're all lore friendly, most of the rangery ones can be crafted, and the recipes are well thought out and balanced. Plus, many of them are perfectly suited for your ranger, like the Hunter armor, or the Vagabond. It nearly doubles the choices of armors you have compared to Vanilla, and they're all gorgeous. Immersive Armor v5 - Best armor compilation you'll find for Skyrim, I doubt anyone would disagree. It's good for just about any playthrough you can imagine.

This gives you more contrast at night, between the scary unknown of the wilderness, and the familiarity of the oft-travelled roads and bridges, and the beacons of civilization to which they lead.Īlternate Start - Live Another Life - (I choose "Camping in the Woods") This way, you don't have to go through the Helgen intro, and you can instead start at a Ranger in the woods, with adequate starting gear (set of fur armor, a bow, wood cutter's axe, cooking pot, plate, and other amenities.) This mod is a constant in my load order. Even in places where it probably shouldn't be so dark. Lanterns of Skyrim - All in One - After using the previous mod, it's going to be really dark at night. You're a man of the wilderness, not everyone's cut out for this shit! Make it feel more uncomfortable, like you're truly roughing it out there. Small, nitpicky thing, but that's what mods are for, right?Ĭlimates of Tamriel - Make Skyrim's weather more harsh and brutal, and your nights darker and full of danger. Here's the relevant portions of my load order:Ĭloser Quivers and Longer Arrows - Just a visual change, very optional, but I like how the quiver seems to actually contact my body, and the arrows are a believable length now.
